Brielle is a small, residential borough on the north bank of the Manasquan River in southern Monmouth County, just up from the inlet at Point Pleasant Beach and Manasquan. It has no ocean beach of its own; its life is on the water, with marinas, the long-established Manasquan River Yacht Club, and one of the larger charter-fishing fleets moored along the river. The draw is boating and fishing, not beach tourism.
History Dutch and English settlers farmed the area in the late 1600s, and by the early 1700s a river port called Union Landing handled shipbuilding and coastal trade; a salt works supplied the Revolution. It stayed part of larger townships, Shrewsbury, then Howell, then Wall, until it became its own borough in 1919, named for Brielle in the Netherlands. After World War II it filled in as a commuter and boating community, though its main industry stayed on the water.
What makes it unique Brielle is a Shore town without a shore. While its neighbors sell sand and boardwalk, Brielle sells dock space, with tidal frontage along the Manasquan River, Debbie's Creek, and the Glimmer Glass lined with marinas and a busy charter fleet. The historic bascule drawbridge over the Glimmer Glass is the kind of landmark that defines the town, in place of an amusement pier.
