Island Heights is a Victorian borough on the north bank of the Toms River, near where it meets Barnegat Bay. It is known for well-preserved Queen Anne houses, tree-lined streets, and a sailing culture centered on the yacht club. The pull is the architecture and the waterfront, a quiet, residential alternative to the barrier-island beach towns nearby. There are no beaches or boardwalk amusements here, and the town has stayed dry since its founding.
History The town began in 1878 as a Methodist camp meeting and Christian family resort. Reverend Jacob Graw and associates incorporated the Island Heights Association, bought the land, and wrote a liquor ban into every deed. The Pennsylvania Railroad reached the town in 1883, bringing middle-class families from Philadelphia and central New Jersey. The borough organized in 1887. Development came fast and early, then mostly stopped, leaving the Victorian core largely intact.
What makes it unique Island Heights is one of the few planned Victorian religious resorts in Ocean County to survive largely whole, and it reads more as a historic riverfront town than a Shore resort. The same bluffs and river light that drew sailors also drew painters: John Frederick Peto and a small art colony worked here in the late 1800s. The dry rule and camp-meeting origins still shape its quiet character.
Interesting facts
Summary Island Heights suits people who want Victorian streets, a working sailing scene, and quiet riverfront walks, not beaches or nightlife. Come for the architecture, the bay, and the boats.
